CLERICAL PRESSURES IN SLOVAKIA OBSTRUCTING A TRUE DEMOCRACY
IMPLEMENTING EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL CITIZENS AND BUILDING A CIVIL SOCIETY IN SLOVAK REPUBLIC REMAIN FAR BEHIND INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS
INTRODUCTIONThe general assembly of Prometheus Society held in April 1999. committed its board to address once again all top State officials of Slovak republic including members of parliament with concrete demands in order to bring to an end the current one-sided discriminatory State policy against non-confessional citizens. The demands which were submitted on August 15, 1999 can be found on this Website index /English contents/ STATEMENTS
( They make up a "minority" of about 30-40 % of the total population.) Due to state policy and lack of any protection against discrimination they are currently pushed to the marginal position in the society despite their legitimate human rights This is systematically being done alongside with measures strengthening an unprecedented material, political , cultural influence of clerical forces in the whole public life of community. Secular oriented citizens , who instead of enjoying equal rights and privileges as others are discriminated against by being deprived of all means needed to preserve and further develop their ways of life, to teach and inform about their life-stance, and to manifest openly their life stance ,
THE REASONS WHICH MADE PROMETHEUS SOCIETY TO SUBMIT THIS PETITION:The reason to this step has been that Prometheus Society during its existence made more than 40 approaches to different top State office holders and other authorities, at which DISCRIMINATION of non-confessional citizens in Slovakia was criticised and EQUAL TREATMENT OF ALL GROUPS OF CITIZENS regardless of their religious or non-religious persuasion was demanded. All these steps aiming at approximation of Slovak legislation and State policy with the situation prevailing in E U remained fruitless.
The situation of non-confessional citizens in Slovakia.
For the time being the „nondenominational“ citizens are not attacked on the street physically only because they have no visible signs of their persuasion., but a widespread and complex propaganda against them has prevailed in all fields of the current State policy
The discrimination against nondenominational people takes place in the following points of State policy :backed also on legislative measures:
A)- No reliable statistic data exist on the numbers and especially on the actual needs of this group of population and even to touch this problem remains a strict „taboo“. According to last census in 1991 28 % of population did not claim adherence to religion, but because of lack of anonymity these numbers in reality have been much higher. One investigation made in 1993 by the Institute of Statistics disclosed as much as 43 % of total population claiming no religious belief.
B.)-The State policy is biased by not accepting the very existence of nondenominational people and instead of this tolerating and supporting a strong warfare against them.
C.)-As concerns legislative measures
The group of secular citizens contribute in 30-40 % to taxes, but all these means are never used for them and for their needs.
E.) As concerns the civil sector.
All these facts and many others created an atmosphere in which citizens are afraid to claim openly their secular- non religious life stance, because if they did, they fear loosing their jobs, the intimidation brought about a complete lack of objections or attempts of self-defence on the part of secular- minded people, which makes an impression that everything is OK.
Prometheus Society considers the situation most serious and deserving essential legal steps for abolishing the unequal position of non-confessional citizens before admitting Slovakia in EUROPEAN UNION
