Slovakian religious bigots heading this State, want to include GOD in the future European Constitution  as an INSTRUMENT for  tyranny over the nondenominational citizens of their country

The STAND taken by PROMETHEUS SOCIETY to the efforts of Slovak delegation to European Convention

To

Secretariat of the European convention                          March 11, 2003
Rue de la Loi, 175
B-1048 BRUSSELS
BELGIUM

Attention: Sir John KERR  Secretary-General

Dear Sir,

Prometheus Society of Slovakia representing the largest minority group of citizens in Slovakia. i.e. citizens not affiliated to any religious creed, wants to address the European Convention expressing the desires of this large minority in Slovakia as to the principles enshrined in the future European Constitution .

We have learned with great apprehension from the Slovak press, that the Slovak delegation to the European Convention was committed to defend inclusion of God as the only source of truth , justice, welfare and beauty in the Constitution.

We consider this step a dangerous attempt for getting legitimacy for one-sided religious fundamentalist practical policy in those (future) member states, which keep avoiding observance of fundamental human rights equally in respect to all citizens, regardless of their religious, nonreligious, or diverse political and cultural convictions.

If the future united Europe wants to embrace the great variety of nations, keep co-operating with non-Christian countries and with the Countries of the Third World, the legitimacy of including Fundamental Human Rights in the Constitution is essential, with strict avoidance of any reference to religion.

The Constitution should go even further. It should state:

No political system or religious movement can be above respect for fundamental human rights and democratic freedoms and neither political affiliation nor religious faith may be used as a mark of identity of citizens and of the democratic governance.

We apologise that our proposition has been not formulated in a strictly legal terminology and jargon, but our intention is clear: To make an end to the situation in which some European Countries try to make of nondenominational citizens an INFERIOUR, SECOND CLASS GROUP of CITIZENS.

With deep respect

Olga Blašková, MD, PhD
